Writing Sprint: Journaling & Vocabulary Development is a two-month course designed to help children develop the habit of expressing themselves through writing while building a stronger and more meaningful vocabulary.
The course introduces students to journaling as a space where they can freely explore their thoughts, feelings, experiences, observations, questions, and ideas. Students learn that journaling is not about writing positively all the time or producing perfect sentences—it is about learning to notice what is happening within and around them and finding the words to express it honestly.
Alongside journaling, students develop their vocabulary through context-based learning, creative activities, reading, observation, and writing exercises. Instead of simply memorising word lists, they learn how to understand words, explore their nuances, and use them naturally in their own writing.
Students will explore:
- What is Journaling? – understanding journaling as a tool for self-expression and reflection
- Emotional Vocabulary – learning words to identify and express different feelings and emotions
- Observation & Description – finding precise words to describe people, places, objects, and experiences
- Vocabulary in Context – understanding how words change meaning depending on how they are used
- Word Exploration – discovering synonyms, antonyms, word families, expressions, and interesting new words
- Personal Expression – learning to express thoughts, opinions, experiences, and emotions with greater clarity
- Creative Journaling – using imagination, memories, prompts, questions, and everyday experiences as writing material
- Reflection – looking back at experiences and understanding what they reveal about oneself
- Writing with Better Words – replacing vague or repetitive language with more precise and expressive vocabulary
Through regular journaling and guided vocabulary activities, students gradually develop the ability to think, feel, observe, and express themselves with greater clarity and confidence.
The emphasis is not simply on learning more words, but on helping children find the right words for what they want to say.
