Reading Section Overview
The CELPIP Reading section consists of 4 tasks designed to test your ability to understand and interpret written English in various contexts. The total duration of this section is 50 minutes.
Task Details:
- Reading Correspondence (Task 1)
- Duration: 15 minutes
- What you’re tested for: Your ability to read and understand short texts like emails, letters, or notices. You’ll answer questions based on the information in these texts.
- Preparation: Practice reading different types of written communication and identifying key details such as tone, purpose, and content.
- Scoring: Your ability to quickly locate relevant information and understand the purpose of the communication will be key to scoring well.
- Reading to Apply a Diagram (Task 2)
- Duration: 15 minutes
- What you’re tested for: Your ability to understand texts related to diagrams or charts, and to answer questions based on how information is presented visually.
- Preparation: Practice reading texts that describe or are accompanied by diagrams, such as instructions, schedules, or technical descriptions. Focus on how the text and diagram work together.
- Scoring: The more accurately you interpret both the text and diagram, the higher your score.
- Reading for Information (Task 3)
- Duration: 10 minutes
- What you’re tested for: Your ability to identify detailed information and make inferences from longer texts, such as articles or reports.
- Preparation: Read a variety of texts (articles, news reports, etc.) and practice finding specific information, such as facts, opinions, and implied meanings.
- Scoring: Correctly identifying specific details and understanding the overall meaning of the passage will help you score better.
- Reading for Viewpoints (Task 4)
- Duration: 10 minutes
- What you’re tested for: Your ability to understand the author’s viewpoint or opinion in more complex texts, and to answer questions that evaluate your understanding of the author’s perspective.
- Preparation: Practice identifying an author’s opinion or purpose in various texts, such as persuasive essays or reviews. Look for tone, argument structure, and evidence.
- Scoring: The key to scoring well is accurately identifying the author’s opinion and supporting details within the text.
What to Do for Preparation:
- Read regularly: Make reading a daily habit. Practice reading articles, newspapers, letters, and emails to familiarize yourself with different writing styles.
- Focus on details: Pay attention to small details in texts, such as names, dates, and key facts, which are often the focus of questions.
- Practice skimming and scanning: Skim through the text to understand the general idea and scan for specific information when answering questions.
- Understand the context: Always try to understand the broader context of the passage, including the author’s purpose and point of view.
- Work on inference skills: Practice drawing conclusions based on the information presented, especially when the answer isn’t explicitly stated.
Scoring Idea:
- Reading Speed: While reading quickly is important, accuracy in answering the questions is essential. Skimming and scanning will help you locate answers quickly.
- Comprehension: Understanding the main idea, supporting details, and specific facts from the texts will contribute greatly to your score.
- Contextual Understanding: Your ability to interpret the author’s tone, viewpoint, or intended message, especially in more complex texts, is crucial.
- Task Completion: Fully answering each question and carefully following the instructions will impact your overall score.
The CELPIP Reading section is scored on a scale from 1 to 12. To achieve a high score, aim to improve your reading speed while maintaining accuracy in comprehension, focusing on detail, and making inferences when necessary. Regular practice with various types of texts will help sharpen your skills.
