Writing Section Overview
The CELPIP Speaking section has 8 tasks designed to assess your ability to speak clearly, coherently, and effectively in everyday situations. The total time for this section is around 20 minutes. Each task requires a response to a prompt, and you’ll be evaluated based on your fluency, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and how well you complete the task.
Task Details:
- Giving Advice (Task 1)
- Duration: 1 minute to prepare, 90 seconds to respond
- What you’re tested for: Your ability to provide advice or suggestions based on a situation presented in the prompt.
- Preparation: Think about the best advice you could offer in similar real-life situations. Focus on clarity and providing practical suggestions.
- Scoring: The more structured and relevant your advice, the better your score.
- Describing a Scene (Task 2)
- Duration: 1 minute to prepare, 90 seconds to respond
- What you’re tested for: Your ability to describe a scene or image in detail, using appropriate vocabulary and descriptions.
- Preparation: Practice visualizing scenes and describing key details, such as colors, actions, people, and objects.
- Scoring: Clear, detailed, and organized descriptions will earn you higher points.
- Making Predictions (Task 3)
- Duration: 1 minute to prepare, 90 seconds to respond
- What you’re tested for: Your ability to make logical predictions based on a given scenario.
- Preparation: Think about possible outcomes or consequences of the situation. Use phrases like “I think,” “It’s likely that,” or “In the future.”
- Scoring: Accuracy, logical reasoning, and clear communication are key.
- Comparing and Persuading (Task 4)
- Duration: 1 minute to prepare, 90 seconds to respond
- What you’re tested for: Your ability to compare two items or situations and persuade someone to choose one.
- Preparation: Practice comparing two things and clearly stating which one is better and why. Use phrases like “On the one hand,” “In comparison,” and “I would suggest.”
- Scoring: Strong argumentation and clarity of thought will be rewarded.
- Expressing Opinions (Task 5)
- Duration: 1 minute to prepare, 90 seconds to respond
- What you’re tested for: Your ability to express an opinion on a particular topic, justifying it with reasons.
- Preparation: Take a clear stance on common issues and practice supporting your opinion with logical reasons and examples.
- Scoring: Clear and confident expression of opinions with supporting details scores higher.
- Describing an Experience (Task 6)
- Duration: 1 minute to prepare, 90 seconds to respond
- What you’re tested for: Your ability to narrate a personal or imagined experience and explain its significance.
- Preparation: Think of experiences you’ve had that can relate to common topics (e.g., travel, events, challenges). Practice telling them in a structured way (beginning, middle, end).
- Scoring: Detail, organization, and relevance of the experience are important.
- Solving a Problem (Task 7)
- Duration: 1 minute to prepare, 90 seconds to respond
- What you’re tested for: Your ability to propose a solution to a problem presented in the task.
- Preparation: Practice identifying problems quickly and thinking through practical, clear solutions. Structure your response logically (state the problem, solution, and reasoning).
- Scoring: Clear problem-solving with logical steps will help improve your score.
- Dealing with a Difficult Situation (Task 8)
- Duration: 1 minute to prepare, 90 seconds to respond
- What you’re tested for: Your ability to manage and communicate in a difficult or stressful situation.
- Preparation: Think of ways to calmly and effectively deal with challenges. Practice offering solutions or handling difficult conversations.
- Scoring: Calm, clear responses with good problem-solving will be highly rated.
What to Do for Preparation:
- Practice speaking regularly: Engage in daily practice to improve fluency and confidence. You can practice with a partner, record yourself, or join a speaking club.
- Simulate real test conditions: Time yourself when practicing and work on answering each task within the given time limit.
- Use diverse vocabulary: Avoid repeating words. Expand your vocabulary to express your ideas clearly.
- Focus on organization: Structure your answers with an introduction, body, and conclusion to make them easier to follow.
- Listen to native speakers: Familiarize yourself with pronunciation and natural speech patterns by listening to podcasts, news, or movies.
Scoring Idea:
- Fluency: Speaking without hesitation and keeping a smooth flow will score higher.
- Pronunciation: Clear and easily understandable pronunciation is essential. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it should be intelligible.
- Vocabulary: A wide range of vocabulary that is used appropriately in context boosts your score.
- Grammar: Accurate grammar, including sentence structures and tenses, is important.
- Task Completion: Ensure that your answers fully address the prompt, and don’t go off-topic. Providing a well-rounded answer with explanations will give you a higher score.
The CELPIP Speaking section is scored on a scale from 1 to 12. A score of 8 or above is generally considered a high level of proficiency, indicating a strong command of English communication. To maximize your score, practice regularly and stay calm during the exam!
