OBJECTIVE OF THE SESSION

The objective of this session is to help students learn advanced vocabulary related to negative attitudes, beliefs, and personality traits.

Through this session, students will:

• understand the meanings and pronunciations of new vocabulary words,
• learn how these words are used in real-life situations,
• improve comprehension and observation skills,
• practice vocabulary through exercises,
• and develop creativity by building stories around the learned words.

Students will also understand that vocabulary should be used thoughtfully and respectfully to describe behavior and personality.

UNDERSTANDING THE WORDS DEEPLY

1. Misanthrope

Misanthrope (MIZ-uhn-thrope)

A misanthrope is a person who develops hatred or deep dislike toward humanity or society in general. Such people may avoid crowds, dislike social interaction, or feel disappointed with human behavior.

Sometimes a person becomes a misanthrope after painful experiences, betrayal, loneliness, or disappointment from society.

Example:

• The old man lived alone in the mountains because he had become a misanthrope after years of disappointment.
• A misanthrope usually prefers isolation over social gatherings.

2. Misogynist

Misogynist (mi-SOJ-uh-nist)

A misogynist is a person who strongly dislikes, disrespects, or hates women. Such a person may believe unfair things about women or treat them unequally.

This word is often used while discussing social behavior, discrimination, or unfair attitudes in society.

Example:

• The character in the story behaved like a misogynist because he constantly insulted women.
• A misogynist may refuse to respect women’s opinions or abilities.

3. Misogamist

Misogamist (mi-SOG-uh-mist)

A misogamist is a person who dislikes or opposes marriage. Such people may believe marriage limits freedom or creates unnecessary responsibilities.

Not every person who avoids marriage is a misogamist. The word is mainly used for someone who strongly dislikes the institution of marriage itself.

Example:

• The man in the novel was a misogamist who never wanted to marry.
• Some fictional characters are shown as misogamists because they fear commitment.
