7. Dreaming Big: Exploring Wishes and Imagination (Wish + Could)
Advik: Hi Arunima! What are you thinking about today?
Arunima: Hi Advik! I was just thinking about my wishes. Do you have any wishes too?
Advik: Yeah, I have a big wish! I wish I could fly like a bird. Wouldn’t that be amazing?
Arunima: Wow, that sounds super cool! I wish I could talk to animals. Imagine having a chat with our pet dog or cat!
Advik: That would be so much fun! I also wish I could have a never-ending supply of ice cream. I’d eat all my favorite flavors every day!
Arunima: Yum! Ice cream is the best. You know what else I wish for? I wish I could visit outer space and see all the planets up close.
Advik: Woah! That’s an awesome wish! I wish I could have a superpower like a superhero. Maybe I’d choose to be super strong!
Arunima: That sounds like a great superpower! I wish I could make it snow anytime I wanted. Snowball fights all year round!
Advik: Haha, that would be so much fun! I wish I could have a magical robot that does all my homework for me.
Arunima: That’s a clever wish! But you know what I wish for the most? I wish all the kids in the world could have everything they need to be happy and healthy.
Advik: Aw, that’s a really nice wish, Arunima! I wish for that too. Maybe if we all work together, we can make our wishes come true!

Difficult words, phrasal verbs, and idioms from the conversation:

“Wish” with “could”

Subject + wish + (that) + subject + could + base form of verb + rest of the sentence.
Example:
- I wish I could fly. (But I can’t, because humans can’t fly without airplanes.)

- He wishes he could teleport. (But teleportation isn’t possible in real life.)
- They wish they could travel to Mars. (But it’s not possible with current technology.)
- We wish we could turn back time. (But time travel isn’t possible.)
In each of these examples, the use of “could” with “wish” expresses a desire for something that is currently not possible or unlikely to happen in the future.
