Guidelines for the Teacher

1. Introduce Hypothetical Conversations (5 minutes):

• Explain the concept:
  Start the session by saying:
  “Today, we’ll imagine fun situations and talk about what we would do in those situations!”
  Explain:
  “A hypothetical situation is something imaginary and not real, but it’s fun to think about.”
• Give examples:
  • If I had a superpower, I would fly around the world.
  • If I found a treasure chest, I would share it with my friends.
• Ask simple warm-up questions (allow students to respond):
  • If you could eat ice cream for breakfast, what would you choose?
  • If animals could talk, which one would you talk to first?

2. Teach Grammar Structure (5 minutes):

• Explain the structure using verbal instruction and text chat:
  • Say:
    “We use the second conditional to talk about imaginary situations.”
  • Type the structure into the chat:
    If + past tense verb, + would + base verb.
• Highlight key points:
  • Say:
    “We say ‘If I had…,’ not ‘If I have…,’ because we’re imagining.”
    “We use ‘would’ to talk about what happens next.”
• Provide spoken examples:
  • “If I had a spaceship, I would visit all the planets.”
  • “If I could live anywhere, I would live in a castle.”
• Check understanding with quick questions:
  • Ask:
    “If you found a magic wand, what would you do?”
    Let students respond and gently guide their sentences if needed.

3. Demonstrate Conversation (5 minutes):

• Role-play a short conversation with one student to model the activity:
  • Teacher: “If you had a pet dinosaur, what would you name it?”
  • Student: “I would name it Dino!”
  • Teacher: “Great! What would Dino eat?”
  • Student: “He would eat grass.”
  • Teacher: “That’s fun! Would Dino be friendly?”
• Encourage creativity and guide students to speak in full sentences.

4. Engage Students in the Activity (15 minutes):

• Would you have whisker?

• Would you have a strong trunk?
• Would you have a large foliage?
• Would you toss your branches?
• Would people like you?
• Would you be happy or sad being a tree?

Student C

If you were an eagle…

• What food would you eat?
• How would you look?
• Where would you live?
• Who would be your friends?
• Would you have strong eyesight?
• Would you have strong wings?
• Would you love to eat pizza?
• Would people like you?
• Would you fly high?
• Would you be happy or sad being an eagle?

Student D

If you were a scooter…

• What fuel would you use to run on the road?
• How many seats you would have?
• Would you have light on your handle?
• Would you give me a ride?
• How many wheel you would have?
• Would you save my time? How?
• Who would be your friends?
• Would people like you?
• Would you be happy or sad being a scooter?

Student E

If you were a tomato……

• What color would you be of?
• What would be your shape?
• Where would you grow?
• Who would be your friends?
• Would you be sweet or sour in taste??
• Would you like to be eaten cooked or raw by people?
• Would you have tiny seeds?
• Would people like you?
• Would you be happy or sad being a tomato?
  

  Few more ideas of asking questions about hypothetical situations:

  • If you could talk to animals, what would you say?
  • If you lived underwater, what would you do?
  • If you could invent a new toy, what would it be?

• Ask follow-up questions to encourage detailed responses:
  • “Why would you do that?”
  • “What happens next?”

5. Teacher’s Role During the Activity

• Encourage Creativity:
  • Say: “That’s a wonderful idea! Can you tell us more?”
• Correct Gently:
  • If a student says: “If I am invisible, I scare my sister,”
    reply: “That’s interesting! If I were invisible, I would scare my sister.”
• Motivate Detail:
  • Ask questions like:
    • “What happens next?”
    • “Why would you do that?”

Debrief (5 minutes)

• Recap the grammar structure:
  • “Today, we learned how to talk about imaginary situations using: If + past tense, + would + base verb.”
• Reflective questions:
  • “What was your favorite question today?”
  • “What new words or ideas did you learn?”
• Encourage students to try these conversations with their family or friends.
