Describing a Historical Event
Objective of the Lesson:
The goal of this lesson is to help students describe a historical event clearly and effectively. Describing a historical event involves explaining what happened, when it happened, and why it was important. In the CELPIP test, students might be asked to talk about a historical event as part of their speaking tasks.
How to Describe a Historical Event:
- Introduce the event: Start by stating the name of the event and when it happened. Use phrases like:
- “One important historical event is…”
- “This event took place in…”
- “It happened during the year…”
- Describe what happened: Give details about the event, such as who was involved, what actions were taken, and the key events. Use phrases like:
- “This event involved…”
- “The main actions were…”
- “It led to…”
- Explain its significance: Discuss why this event was important and what impact it had on society or the world. Use phrases like:
- “This event changed…”
- “It was significant because…”
- “As a result of this event…”
- Provide context or background information: To help the listener understand the event better, give a bit of history leading up to it. Use phrases like:
- “Before this event…”
- “The situation before this was…”

Person A:
“Can you tell me about an important historical event?”
Person B:
