Describing Leadership Qualities

Activity Overview:

In this activity, you will practice talking about leadership qualities. You will discuss the traits that make a good leader, how these qualities help leaders succeed, and give examples from your own experience or from people you admire.

Step 1: Prepare for the Speaking Task (5-10 minutes)

Before you start speaking, take a few minutes to think about the topic and the questions.

Tips for Talking About Leadership Qualities:

• Define leadership qualities: Start by explaining what leadership qualities are and why they are important.
  • Example: “Leadership qualities are the traits or skills that help someone lead a group successfully. These qualities can include communication, confidence, and the ability to make decisions.”
• Discuss key qualities: Focus on the most important qualities that make a good leader.
  • Example: “A good leader is someone who is confident, trustworthy, and able to inspire others. They should be able to communicate clearly and listen to their team.”
• Explain how these qualities help: Discuss how these qualities make a leader effective.
  • Example: “Confidence helps a leader make decisions without doubting themselves, and trust helps build a strong team.”
• Use examples: Talk about someone who you think is a good leader and why.

Listen to the following example. This is how you can organize your thoughts for this topic.

“A good leader should have a few important qualities. One of the most important is communication. A leader needs to be able to explain their ideas clearly to others and also listen to their team. This helps the group understand the leader’s vision and work together better.

Another important quality is confidence. A leader needs to believe in their decisions, even when things get difficult. When a leader shows confidence, it helps the team feel more secure and motivated.

Trustworthiness is also essential. If a leader is trustworthy, their team members will follow them without hesitation. Trust is the foundation of any strong team.

For example, my school principal is a great leader because she is always clear in her communication, and she listens to both students and teachers. She also makes decisions confidently, which helps our school run smoothly.”
