The goal of this lesson is to help students compare two cities based on factors such as cost of living, lifestyle, job opportunities, and climate. In the CELPIP test, students might need to compare two cities as part of their speaking or writing tasks, especially when making decisions about where to live.
Topic: “Comparing Two Cities: Toronto vs. Vancouver”
Person A:
“I’m thinking about moving to a new city. I’m considering either Toronto or Vancouver. Which one do you think is better?”
Person B:
“Both cities are great, but they have their differences. Let’s compare them. Toronto has a lower cost of living compared to Vancouver, especially when it comes to housing.”
Person A:
“That’s true. What about the weather?”
Person B:
“Well, Toronto has cold winters and hot summers, while Vancouver has mild winters but a lot of rain throughout the year. So, it depends on which type of weather you prefer.”
Person A:
“How about job opportunities?”
Person B:
“Toronto is known as the business hub of Canada, so there are more corporate job opportunities there. Vancouver, on the other hand, has a lot of tech companies and is great for outdoor activities like hiking.”
Person A:
“So, which one would you recommend?”
Person B:
“If you’re looking for better job opportunities and don’t mind the cold winters, I’d say Toronto. But if you prefer a more laid-back lifestyle and enjoy outdoor activities, Vancouver might be a better fit.”
Record a 2-minute video where you compare two cities where you’ve lived or visited, such as New York and Los Angeles. Use the following steps:
