Objective:
To help CELPIP aspirants express their thoughts clearly on how to solve problems, develop problem-solving ideas, and speak for at least 5 minutes by using structured techniques.
Part 1: Understanding How to Talk About Solving a Problem
Key Steps for Discussing a Problem Solution:
- Identify the Problem: Start by clearly explaining the problem. Use phrases like:
- “The main issue here is…”
- “The problem arises when…”
- Propose a Solution: Suggest one or more possible solutions to the problem. Use expressions like:
- “One possible solution is…”
- “This issue could be resolved by…”
- Explain Why It’s Effective: Support your solution with reasons or examples, explaining why it will work:
- “This would help because…”
- “By doing this, we can…”
- Acknowledge Alternative Solutions: Mention other possible solutions and explain why your idea is better:
- “While others may suggest…, I believe…”
- “Another option could be…”
- Conclude with Confidence: Summarize the problem and restate your solution in a strong way. For example:
- “To conclude, the best way to solve this problem is…”
Example Conversation (Solving a Problem in Public Transportation)
Question: What are some solutions to improve public transportation in your city?
Response:

Part 2: How to Generate Ideas on Problem Solving (5-Minute Speaking Method)
To speak effectively about problem-solving, the following method will help you generate ideas:
1. Use the PROBLEM-SOLUTION Method
- Identify the Problem: Clearly describe the problem.
- Analyze Causes: Explain why this problem exists.
- Propose a Solution: Suggest one or more ways to fix it.
- Explain the Benefits: Discuss why your solution is effective.
- Consider Alternatives: Mention other solutions and why yours is better.
- Predict the Outcome: Explain the long-term benefits of your solution.
Example: Topic – “Solving Environmental Pollution in Cities”
- Problem: Air pollution levels in cities are dangerously high.
- Causes: This is caused by heavy traffic, industrial emissions, and a lack of green spaces.
- Solution: Introduce stricter emissions regulations for factories and promote the use of electric vehicles.
