5. Talking About Your Hobbies
Objective: Help the student learn to organize ideas and talk about hobbies in a clear and structured manner.
Step 1: Organizing Your Ideas
Before talking about your hobbies, think about the following structure:
- Introduction: Briefly introduce your hobbies.
- Example: “I have a few hobbies that I enjoy in my free time.”
- Detailing the hobbies: Describe each hobby.
- What is the hobby?
- How often do you do it?
- Why do you enjoy it?
- The benefits: Talk about what you gain from your hobbies.
- Does it help you relax, stay fit, or improve your skills?
- Future plans: Mention if you want to improve or try new hobbies.
Step 2: Conversation Samples
Sample 1: Reading as a Hobby
Introduction:
“I have always been passionate about reading. It’s one of my favorite hobbies.”
Details:
“I read every evening, usually for about an hour. I enjoy reading fiction, especially mystery novels. The suspense and the clever twists keep me engaged.”
Benefits:
“Reading helps me relax after a long day and improves my vocabulary. It also sparks my imagination, which is something I value.”
Future Plans:
“In the future, I want to explore more non-fiction books, especially on history.”
Sample 2: Playing a Musical Instrument
Introduction:
“One of my hobbies is playing the guitar.”
Details:

Benefits:

Step 3: Vocabulary and Definitions
Here are some difficult words from the samples, along with their meanings and example sentences:
- Passionate: Having strong feelings or enthusiasm for something.
- Usage: “She is passionate about art and spends hours painting.”
- Suspense: A state of excitement or nervousness about what might happen.
- Usage: “The movie kept me in suspense until the very end.”
- Engaged: Involved or interested in something.
- Usage: “I was so engaged in the book that I lost track of time.”
- Concentration: The ability to focus on a task without being distracted.
- Usage: “This job requires a lot of concentration and attention to detail.”
- Coordination: The ability to use different parts of the body together smoothly and efficiently.
- Usage: “Playing the piano improves hand-eye coordination.”
- Accomplishment: A feeling of pride when you achieve something.
- Usage: “Finishing the project gave me a sense of accomplishment.”
Step 4: Selfie Assignment
Assignment:
Record a short video (1-2 minutes) where you talk about your hobbies in detail. Use the structure mentioned above: introduce your hobbies, describe them, explain their benefits, and talk about any future plans.
