Part 1: Listening to Problem Solving – Scheduling a Doctor’s Appointment
Patient: “Hello, I need to schedule an appointment with Dr. Smith. I’ve been feeling unwell for the past few days and I think I need a check-up.”
Receptionist: “I’m sorry to hear that. Let me check Dr. Smith’s availability. Are you looking for an appointment during the day or in the evening?”
Patient: “I would prefer an evening appointment, preferably around 5:00 PM.”
Receptionist: “Dr. Smith is available at 5:00 PM on Thursday. Does that work for you?”
Patient: “Yes, that works. Can you also tell me if I need to bring anything, like a health card or ID?”
Receptionist: “Yes, please bring your health card and a valid ID for verification. We also ask that you arrive 10 minutes early to fill out some forms.”
Patient: “Thank you. I’ll see you on Thursday at 5:00 PM.”

Part 2: Listening to a Daily Life Conversation – Neighbors Talking About Gardening Tips
Neighbor 1: “I’ve been trying to grow some tomatoes in my garden, but they’re not growing well. Any tips?”
Neighbor 2: “Tomatoes need a lot of sunlight, so make sure they’re in a spot that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Have you been watering them enough?”
Neighbor 1: “I water them every morning, but I’m not sure if it’s enough. Do you think I’m overwatering them?”
Neighbor 2: “It’s possible. Tomatoes don’t like to sit in water. You should water them deeply but less frequently, and let the soil dry out between waterings.”
Neighbor 1: “Ah, I see. I also planted some herbs, but they’re growing very slowly. What am I doing wrong?”
Neighbor 2: “Herbs are a bit tricky. You need to make sure they’re planted in well-drained soil and not too close together. They also need regular pruning to encourage growth.”
Neighbor 1: “Thanks for the advice! I’ll try that and see how it goes.”

Part 5: Listening to a Discussion – Planning a Fundraising Event for Charity
Event Organizer: “Alright, team, we need to finalize the details for our upcoming fundraising event for the local animal shelter. We’ve decided to host it at the community center on May 15th. The event will start at 3:00 PM. I think we should focus on a silent auction and a raffle to raise money. What do you all think?”
Team Member 1: “I think that sounds good. We could also have a bake sale, where people can buy homemade goods. It’s always a big hit at these events.”
Team Member 2: “I agree, but I also think we should have a short presentation about the shelter’s work. That way, people will understand where their money is going.”
Event Organizer: “Great idea! A presentation will definitely make the event more meaningful. Let’s also think about how we’re going to promote it. Should we focus on social media, or should we send out flyers?”
Team Member 3: “Social media is great, but I think flyers would reach people who might not be online. Maybe we could do both.”
Event Organizer: “Okay, we’ll do both. Let’s set up a meeting next week to finalize the guest list and the event timeline. Thanks, everyone!”
Questions for Part 5:
Part 6: Listening for Viewpoints – Is It Better to Work from Home or in an Office?
Speaker 1: “I believe working from home offers more flexibility. You can create your own schedule, avoid long commutes, and spend more time with family. Plus, the comfort of working in your own space can improve productivity.”
Speaker 2: “I disagree. While working from home has its perks, I think office work promotes better collaboration. You can interact with colleagues face-to-face, share ideas quickly, and get instant feedback. There’s also a separation between work and home life, which can improve focus.”
Speaker 1: “That’s true, but don’t you think working from home allows for a better work-life balance? You don’t need to worry about office politics or the stress of daily commutes.”
Speaker 2: “It’s true that working from home can be less stressful in some ways, but it also makes it harder to disconnect from work. Without clear boundaries, it can be difficult to separate personal and professional time.”
